India’s domestic air passenger traffic saw a 6.12% increase in 2024, reaching 161.3 million passengers, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This growth follows a substantial 23.36% rise in 2023, fueled by the recovery after the pandemic. IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, maintained its market dominance, boosting its share from 60.5% in 2023 to 61.9% in 2024, transporting nearly 100 million passengers. In contrast, SpiceJet’s market share dropped from 5.5% to 3.7%, with just six million passengers flown domestically.
The Air India Group, which includes Air India, Air India Express, and Vistara (merged into Air India in November 2024), transported 45.8 million passengers, up from 39.49 million in 2023. With a fleet of around 300 aircraft, the Group plans to grow its fleet to 400 planes in the next three years, supported by a significant order of 570 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. In terms of on-time performance, IndiGo led with a rate of 73.4% in December 2024, while the Air India Group followed with 67.6%.
