On December 24, 2024, the Indian government unveiled several initiatives to bolster consumer protection, spearheaded by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. These efforts include launching cutting-edge AI-driven tools such as the National Consumer Helpline, the e-maap portal, and the Jago Grahak Jago mobile app. These advancements are designed to empower consumers, detect deceptive marketing practices, and expedite dispute resolution. Prominent e-commerce players like Reliance Retail, Tata Sons, and Zomato have pledged their support to improve the safety of online shopping.
Speaking at the National Consumer Day celebration, Mr. Joshi underscored the nation’s progress in addressing consumer grievances. Between January and November 2024, the three-tier consumer court system resolved 6,587 cases, significantly outpacing the 3,628 new cases filed with the National Commission during the same period. He also highlighted the success of the e-Daakhil Portal, launched in 2020 and expanded nationwide by mid-2023, enabling seamless online complaint filing in states such as Karnataka, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Mr. Joshi emphasized the importance of building consumer confidence amidst the digital revolution. In alignment with this, the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) is developing stricter regulations for surrogate advertising. Notably, 13 companies have recently faced notices for non-compliance with current advertising standards. These initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to creating a safer, more transparent marketplace for consumers across the nation.
