Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), outlined India’s strategic vision for artificial intelligence (AI) and the country’s digital future at the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) 2024, held on December 9-10, 2024. He emphasized the government’s goal of developing AI “in India, for India, and for all,” with a focus on addressing governance challenges and promoting a secure, inclusive, and open digital environment.
In his address, Prasada echoed the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the significance of the internet as a cornerstone for economies and societies, similar to how rivers and highways shaped past generations. He stressed the importance of India’s role in shaping the United Nations’ Global Digital Compact (GDC) to establish shared principles for equitable and secure digital technologies globally.
Reflecting on India’s digital achievements, he pointed to groundbreaking initiatives like UPI, Aadhaar, and Digital India, which have set global benchmarks. The country has also made significant strides in connecting 95% of villages via 3G/4G networks, even in remote regions, and fostering a tech-driven startup ecosystem, with over 600 districts hosting innovative businesses—half of them led by women.
However, Prasada also emphasized the need to tackle cybersecurity challenges, combat misinformation, and improve network resilience. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate on advanced security protocols and sustainable practices to mitigate challenges such as data centre energy consumption and e-waste. He reiterated that the collective efforts of users and stakeholders would ensure technology serves as a force multiplier, benefiting all citizens while promoting a secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital future.
