On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the need for integrating technology to ease the workload of police forces and proposed that police stations should become central points for resource allocation. Speaking at the 59th All India Conference of Director Generals/Inspector Generals of Police, Modi urged the police forces to evolve into more strategic, meticulous, adaptable, reliable, and transparent units.
PM Modi expressed concerns over the growing threats posed by digital frauds, cybercrimes, and deepfakes. He called for the police leadership to view these challenges as opportunities by utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) alongside India’s ambition for progress. The Prime Minister also mentioned the extensive discussions on national and international security challenges during the conference and appreciated the counter-strategies that emerged.
Encouraging the adoption of AI, Modi suggested the implementation of these strategies across 100 cities to further enhance urban policing. He revisited the concept of SMART policing, which he introduced in 2014, emphasizing systemic changes in police forces to make them strict yet sensitive, modern and mobile, alert and accountable, reliable and responsive, techno-savvy and trained.
Around 250 senior officers attended the three-day conference, with over 750 others joining virtually. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also participated.
