Mallika Sherawat recently garnered support on social media due to a throwback video where a journalist criticised her for labelling India as ‘regressive.’ In response to this, she has also reflected on her past comments about Kamala Harris. Sherawat had previously predicted that Harris could become the future US President, and she has reaffirmed her praise for Harris in a recent Vanity Fair interview.
Sherawat discussed the scarcity of female politicians in India, noting that they are often from dynastic or royal backgrounds. She contrasted this with Kamala Harris, whom she admired for being a self-made leader. Sherawat recalled attending a Beverly Hills fundraiser for Harris when she was running for California attorney general. Despite feeling out of place, Sherawat appreciated Harris’s advice on stepping out of one’s comfort zone to build character and strength.
A 2009 tweet from Sherawat, which recently resurfaced, featured a photo with Harris and expressed excitement about her potential future as US President. Sherawat’s tweet read, “Having fun at a fancy event with a woman who they say could be US President, Kamala Harris. Chicks rule!”
In recent news, Sherawat revisited a 2013 press conference where she was questioned about her views on India being regressive. She shared that she faced harassment and bullying for her opinions, which were based on issues such as female foeticide, infanticide, and early marriages. She reaffirmed her stance, citing alarming statistics about the state of women in India.
Sherawat began her Bollywood career with the 2003 film Khwahish and gained commercial success with Murder (2004), directed by Anurag Basu. Her other notable works include Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Welcome, Double Dhamaal, and Dirty Politics. She also appeared in Hollywood films like Hiss and Politics of Love. Her most recent role was in the Tamil horror-thriller Pambattam.
