The Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) declared Dr. Deepan Kishore, DVM, MS, DAVBP (Canine & Feline), Founding ER Fellow, as the Veterinarian of the Year during its annual conference in late January. Dr. Kishore, the first Indian-Origin Veterinarian to receive this accolade in Oklahoma, completed veterinary school in India at Madras Veterinary College (MVC) in 2007 and pursued a Master’s Degree at the University of Missouri in 2010.
His clinical rotations in 2011-2012 at Oklahoma State University (OSU) Veterinary College, particularly at Neel Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma City, guided his career path. Dr. Kishore’s mentorship from hospital founder Dr. Tina Neel and other veterinarians solidified his commitment to Oklahoma. Since joining Neel Veterinary Hospital, he achieved Specialist Diplomate status within the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine & Feline) and earned the ABVP Founding ER Fellow title in 2022.
Expressing surprise and gratitude upon receiving the Veterinarian of the Year award, Dr. Kishore acknowledged the support of God, his parents, family, and co-workers. He emphasized his daily goal of delivering excellent patient care and mentoring vet students and newly graduated Veterinary Associates. Dr. Kishore credited mentors in India and the United States, including Dr. Don Spiers, Dr. Megan Garrison, and Dr. Tina Neel.
Dr. Neel, a 1979 OSU Veterinary College graduate, nominated Dr. Kishore for the VOTY award, praising his exceptional abilities and contributions to Neel Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Kishore’s 10-year tenure at the hospital involved establishing a cancer research department and introducing advanced surgical procedures for complex cases.
Practice Manager Katy Hawkins, whose dog benefited from Dr. Kishore’s expertise, commended his dedication to patient well-being and personalized care. Dr. Kishore, proud of his Indian heritage, enjoys playing cricket and cherishes time with his family and dog, Smiley.
