At a Christmas event hosted at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence, former athlete Anju Bobby George commended the Prime Minister for the transformative impact on sports in India. Reflecting on her 25-year sports career, George highlighted the substantial changes in the sports landscape, expressing admiration for the recognition and celebration of today’s athletes by both the nation and its leadership.
Recalling her own experience two decades ago when she won India’s first global medal, George noted the lack of support and promotion from her department. However, she contrasted this with the current scenario, citing the widespread celebration of Neeraj Chopra’s medal. George credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for this positive shift, particularly through initiatives like ‘Khelo India’ and ‘Fit India,’ which have contributed to the success of Indian athletes on the international stage.
Addressing the empowerment of women, George expressed satisfaction that every Indian girl now dares to dream, anticipating that their dreams will materialize. She also lauded India’s proposal to host the 2036 Olympics. George, who won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics and achieved personal success at the 2004 Olympic Games, recognized the significant role of the Prime Minister in promoting sports.
Participating in an event where the Prime Minister engaged with the Christian community on Christmas, George praised Modi’s commitment to fostering sports. She expressed optimism that India, under the Prime Minister’s leadership, would ascend to the pinnacle of sporting success in the near future. George, a recipient of prestigious awards like the Arjuna Award, Khel Ratna, and Padma Shri, has been a notable figure in Indian athletics.
