The initiative “Women for Water, Water for Women” aims to enhance women’s involvement in water governance. Spanning three days, the program raises awareness and imparts firsthand knowledge of water treatment processes through visits to Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) in participants’ respective cities.
On its inaugural day, over 41 million women from various states engaged in the heart of the campaign during “Jal Diwali.” The program successfully empowers women through knowledge, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility toward water infrastructure. Participants will explore more than 200 water treatment plants across the country, gaining valuable insights into the complex processes of delivering clean and safe drinking water to households. They will also receive guidance on water quality testing protocols, ensuring the highest standards of water purity for their communities.
This groundbreaking initiative, led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the flagship scheme – AMRUT, in collaboration with the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) and Odisha Urban Academy, focuses on the significance of water infrastructure and management, marking a first in its kind.
Simultaneously, under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), the Modi government has achieved a remarkable feat, providing tap water connections to 130 million rural households in India—a significant rise from a mere 32.3 million in 2019. Launched on August 15, 2019, the JJM aims to ensure safe and quality water for every household in India, a crucial step as there are approximately 170 million rural households in the country.
