Rohit Sharma provided an update on the fitness of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of India’s clash with Sri Lanka at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Pandya had injured his ankle during India’s group match against Bangladesh and had been sidelined since. Rohit was questioned about Pandya’s potential return to full fitness before the Sri Lanka match and mentioned that he wouldn’t be available for that game.
Rohit explained that Pandya’s injury required daily assessment to gauge his progress and recovery, both in terms of bowling and batting. The captain stated that they would take a day-to-day approach regarding Pandya’s return.
Regarding the upcoming match against South Africa, Rohit didn’t disclose whether Pandya would make his return. He pointed out the tight schedule of the World Cup matches happening every few days and emphasized the need to monitor the situation closely.
Pacer Mohammed Shami had performed well in Pandya’s absence, taking nine wickets in India’s last two matches. Rohit didn’t confirm whether Shami would retain his place in the side when Pandya returns. He mentioned that various combinations were possible as they aimed for a third World Cup victory and their second on home soil.
Rohit stressed the importance of flexibility in team selection, particularly considering the effectiveness of spinners in the middle overs during this World Cup. He mentioned the possibility of playing three spinners if the situation demanded it, with the priority being to find the right combination for each game.
