India and Australia have successfully completed the fifth edition of their bilateral military exercise, AUSTRAHIND 2026, marking another important step in strengthening defense relations between the two countries. The 14-day exercise concluded on Sunday, November 1, with a closing ceremony at the Foreign Training Node in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, according to the Indian Army. The training brought together personnel from both armies to improve operational coordination, develop mutual confidence, and reinforce their shared commitment to regional stability and security.
The military engagement featured extensive training activities across challenging jungle, island, and coastal landscapes. Its major highlight was a 36-hour Joint Validation Exercise conducted under a United Nations Chapter VII scenario. The exercise tested the forces’ combat preparedness, tactical coordination, and ability to operate together effectively. It also demonstrated a comprehensive inter-service approach, supported by coordination among the Indian Navy, Vizhinjam Port Authority, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Kerala Police, and other government and civilian agencies.
Another significant component involved joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) training along the Thiruvananthapuram coastline. During this activity, the Indian Navy’s INS Sharda and a Sea King helicopter worked alongside Indian and Australian army personnel to execute a rapid ship-to-shore troop deployment. The operation highlighted the effective coordination of naval, aerial, and ground forces during complex missions.
The Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command emphasized that the exercise improved joint operational readiness and strengthened military cooperation. Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green also highlighted its importance, noting that such engagements encourage mutual understanding, build trust, and deepen the defense partnership between the two nations.
The successful conclusion of AUSTRAHIND 2026 reinforces India’s and Australia’s determination to expand military collaboration and work together toward regional security.
