India and Kenya are expanding their maritime partnership through joint training, operational exercises, and professional exchanges in Mombasa, Kenya. The engagement involved Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varaha and personnel from the Kenya Coast Guard Service, with activities emphasizing maritime safety, law enforcement, and coastal security. The initiative aligns with India’s MAHASAGAR vision for regional maritime cooperation.
On Wednesday, the Indian Assistant High Commission in Mombasa reported that the ship’s second day of operational engagement included a tabletop maritime search-and-rescue exercise. Kenyan personnel also participated in training on Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS), as well as Nuclear, Biological, Chemical and Damage Control (NBCD) procedures. These activities aimed to improve coordination, strengthen enforcement capabilities, and enhance safety at sea. The crew also welcomed local residents and members of the Indian diaspora aboard, encouraging community engagement and cultural connections.
Earlier, ICGS Varaha hosted a yoga session attended by crew members and the Indian diaspora. The Indian mission described the activity as an opportunity to celebrate shared cultural heritage and promote regional harmony.
During the port visit, the ship’s commanding officer, Commander Ramanjeet Singh Rana, accompanied by India’s Defence Advisor in Nairobi, met Bruno Shioso, Director General of the Kenya Coast Guard Service. Discussions centered on expanding cooperation through training programs and joint exercises. The delegation also met Captain William Ruto, Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority, to discuss port security, maritime safety, connectivity, and ways to facilitate bilateral trade.
ICGS Varaha arrived in Mombasa on Monday as part of its overseas deployment. According to India’s High Commission in Nairobi, this marked the third visit by an Indian Navy or Coast Guard vessel to the Kenyan port city in 2026, following visits by INS Trikand and INS Tarkash. The recurring engagements reflect growing maritime ties under the BAHARI Joint Vision and India’s MAHASAGAR initiative.
