US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks by honoring those who lost their lives and reiterating the United States’ determination to stand firmly against terrorism.
In a message shared on Friday, Gor remembered the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks and extended his thoughts and prayers to their families. His statement came as the United States and communities around the world commemorated a defining moment in modern American history.
The attacks on September 11, 2001, were carried out after 19 al-Qaeda members seized control of four commercial passenger aircraft. Two of the planes were flown into New York City’s World Trade Center, while another struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
The fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, went down in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the plane. Their actions prevented the hijackers from reaching their intended destination in Washington, DC. The passengers’ resistance has since become one of the most remembered acts of courage associated with the attacks.
US President Donald Trump also designated September 11 as Patriot Day as the country observed the 25th anniversary. In a White House proclamation, Trump noted that a generation of Americans has now grown up without personal memories of the attacks, underscoring the importance of preserving the history of that day.
Trump called on Americans to continue honoring those who died and to ensure that the lessons of September 11 remain part of the nation’s collective memory. He also highlighted the bravery of the Flight 93 passengers, including Todd Beamer, who was among those who helped organize resistance against the hijackers.
Beyond the victims, the president paid tribute to the police officers, firefighters, emergency responders, rescue personnel and volunteers who rushed to help during the attacks and their aftermath. The proclamation noted that nearly 100 emergency and first-responder agencies took part in rescue and evacuation operations in New York City.
As the 25th anniversary was observed, Gor’s message echoed a continuing US commitment to remembering the victims while maintaining a strong stance against terrorism and honoring the courage displayed during one of America’s darkest days.
