Career diplomat Satish Kumar Sivan has assumed charge as the new Consul General of India in San Francisco, succeeding Dr. K. Srikar Reddy, who has taken up a new assignment as India’s Ambassador to Qatar.
Sivan brings nearly two decades of diplomatic experience to the position, having served in several important assignments within the Ministry of External Affairs and at Indian diplomatic missions abroad.
Before his appointment in San Francisco, Sivan served as Consul General of India in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, where he worked closely with the Indian diaspora and the UAE government on matters related to business, trade and investment.
During his Dubai tenure, he participated in India-UAE trade and investment initiatives and held engagements with senior officials, including the ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
Sivan has also held key positions at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. His assignments included work in the External Affairs Minister’s office and the East Asia Division, where he handled India’s relations with China, South Korea and Mongolia.
As Joint Secretary, he oversaw the Rapid Response Cell and the Development Partnership Administration Division, which manages India’s grant-in-aid and development assistance projects in neighbouring countries.
His overseas diplomatic experience includes assignments at Indian missions in Beijing and Washington, D.C., as well as serving as Deputy Chief of Mission in Seoul.
A native of Tamil Nadu, Sivan holds a master’s degree in commerce from the University of Madras and joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2005.
His appointment comes at an important time for India-US relations, with the San Francisco Consulate playing a significant role in engaging the large and influential Indian-American community, as well as supporting economic, technological and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
