Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for a stronger economic dimension to the India-US relationship, describing the partnership as one of the most consequential global alliances of the 21st century. Speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce National Convention, he said the relationship should now progress from strategic alignment toward concrete economic cooperation.
Fadnavis positioned Maharashtra as an important platform for this next stage, emphasizing the state’s strengths in talent, connectivity, industrial capacity and technology. He said emerging opportunities created by changes in global supply chains could help India develop reliable centers for advanced manufacturing, global capability centers and digital infrastructure.
Technology, he noted, will remain a major pillar of future bilateral cooperation. Maharashtra is seeking a role across digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and innovation-driven industries, with opportunities for collaboration extending into high-value technology and data infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also pointed to Maharashtra’s established pharmaceutical sector and its expanding healthcare ambitions. He highlighted the 165-acre Medicity project, which includes Cleveland Clinic as an anchor partner, as part of efforts to position the state as an international destination for medical services and tourism.
Fadnavis also stressed the importance of greater participation by women in economic activity. Addressing a convention that placed particular attention on women leaders, he said sustainable growth requires women to play a central role as business leaders, investors and entrepreneurs.
For international businesses considering expansion, the Chief Minister presented Maharashtra as more than a regional destination. He described the state as a potential launchpad for companies seeking access to skilled talent, industrial infrastructure and broader global markets. He further stressed that investments should create tangible employment and economic opportunities for young people.
The convention brought together business leaders, policymakers and diplomats to discuss practical opportunities in sectors including digital technology, advanced manufacturing and healthcare infrastructure. U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor was among the prominent participants.
During a separate meeting with Gor in Mumbai, Fadnavis discussed ways to increase U.S. investment in Maharashtra, particularly in semiconductors, data centers, higher education and advanced technology. The discussions reflected the state’s broader effort to attract international capital and build stronger commercial links between India and the United States.
Fadnavis said greater collaboration in these sectors could help transform the bilateral relationship into one driven increasingly by investment, innovation and joint economic development.
