India and Saudi Arabia are expected to take their longstanding strategic partnership to a higher level in the coming years, according to Ambassador-designate Vipul, who is preparing to take charge of India’s diplomatic mission in Riyadh.
Speaking ahead of his new assignment, Vipul described the relationship between the two countries as historic, distinctive and strategically important. He said the interests of New Delhi and Riyadh increasingly align across several areas, creating opportunities for closer cooperation as both countries navigate a changing regional environment.
Vipul said he was honored by the Indian government’s decision to appoint him to the Saudi Arabia posting. The Ministry of External Affairs announced his appointment on June 2. He is currently India’s ambassador to Qatar and is expected to assume his new responsibilities in Saudi Arabia shortly.
Reflecting on the trajectory of bilateral relations, the diplomat said ties have strengthened considerably over the past decade. He pointed to growing cooperation across multiple sectors and emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in the strategic relationship.
Political engagement between the two countries has also remained active. India and Saudi Arabia regularly interact through the Strategic Partnership Council, with senior officials and ministers meeting to discuss areas of mutual interest. Vipul said continued high-level communication has helped reinforce the relationship.
The ambassador-designate also highlighted the importance of India-Saudi coordination as tensions continue to affect West Asia. He described the regional situation as a major concern internationally and stressed that maintaining close communication between New Delhi and Riyadh is particularly important during periods of instability.
According to Vipul, regional stability is closely linked to India’s broader development priorities. He said India has a strong interest in a peaceful and stable West Asia, given the region’s importance to the country’s economic and strategic interests.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have also maintained direct communication on regional developments. During a phone conversation on March 28, the two leaders discussed the conflict in West Asia and the need to protect regional energy infrastructure.
Modi also emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and keeping shipping routes safe and operational. He thanked the Saudi leadership for its continued support for the welfare of the large Indian community living in the kingdom.
The leadership-level engagement comes against the backdrop of escalating conflict in West Asia following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Iran subsequently responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US and Israeli facilities, regional capitals and allied forces.
Against this backdrop, stronger India-Saudi coordination could become increasingly important. Vipul’s upcoming assignment is expected to further support efforts to expand bilateral cooperation while strengthening communication on regional and global issues.
