The Indian Naval Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini represented India at the United States International Naval Review 250 and the Sail4th 250 celebrations held in New York, marking a significant moment in maritime cooperation between India and the United States. The ship took part in the Parade of Sail on the Hudson River as part of the celebrations commemorating America’s 250th Independence anniversary.
The Embassy of India in Washington highlighted the vessel’s arrival at the Port of New York and New Jersey, noting that the three-masted barque proudly displayed the Indian tricolour during the international maritime parade. The ship’s participation symbolized India’s rich naval heritage and its growing engagement in global maritime diplomacy.
The embassy further stated that INS Sudarshini is part of the broader “Lokayan 2026” expedition, a long-distance transoceanic voyage designed to strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding between navies across different countries. The mission emphasizes India’s commitment to maritime outreach and international collaboration under the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” meaning the world is one family.
The ship had earlier completed the Sail250 phase of its journey, participating in events in Norfolk and Baltimore before continuing its voyage along the US East Coast. During its stop in Baltimore, the vessel navigated historic waterways, including the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, as part of its multi-month global expedition that began in Kochi.
Prior to its arrival in New York, INS Sudarshini also took part in the Sail250 Virginia celebrations in Norfolk, where it joined a fleet of international tall ships and naval vessels in public parades and ceremonial events. The journey has covered more than 13,000 nautical miles over five months, showcasing India’s traditional sailing expertise alongside modern naval outreach efforts.
Officials emphasized that the participation of INS Sudarshini in Sail4th 250 not only reflects India’s maritime legacy but also strengthens naval cooperation with the United States. The event brought together ships, aircraft, and delegations from multiple countries across major US ports, including Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, Boston, and New Orleans, as part of the nationwide celebrations marking 250 years of American independence.
