India and Nepal have taken a significant step forward in digital financial integration with the launch of a real-time cross-border payment linkage between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI). The collaboration, led by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Nepal Clearing House Ltd (NCHL), is designed to make money transfers between the two countries faster, more secure, and more affordable.
The newly introduced system enables instant person-to-person remittances across borders, reducing dependency on traditional and often slower banking channels. Users can now send funds using simple identifiers such as mobile numbers or virtual payment addresses instead of complex bank account details. For individuals sending money from India to Nepal, UPI-based identifiers are used, while Nepal-based users can similarly initiate transfers back to India through compatible digital payment systems.
Currently, the service is being rolled out through select financial institutions, with plans to expand access to a wider network of banks in the near future. The system operates in real time, ensuring that transactions are completed within seconds, offering a significant improvement in convenience and efficiency for users on both sides of the border.
According to NIPL, the initiative is intended to enhance financial inclusion and deepen digital connectivity between India and Nepal. It also aligns with broader international goals, including the G20 framework, which encourages the development of faster, more accessible, and cost-effective cross-border payment systems through interoperability between national financial infrastructures.
The platform is expected to particularly benefit families and individuals who rely on regular remittances, offering them a more transparent and economical alternative to conventional money transfer services that often involve higher fees and longer processing times. By reducing friction in cross-border payments, the system supports smoother financial flows between the two economies.
Leaders from both organizations have emphasized the importance of this development. NPCI International’s leadership highlighted its commitment to building innovative and inclusive payment solutions that address global financial needs. Similarly, officials from Nepal Clearing House described the initiative as a milestone in the evolution of digital payments, underscoring its potential to simplify and modernize cross-border transactions.
Beyond individual convenience, the linkage is expected to strengthen the broader India-Nepal economic corridor by enabling secure and traceable digital transactions. Observers note that the partnership could also serve as a model for similar interoperable payment systems in other regions, paving the way for a more connected global digital payments ecosystem.
