India is continuing diplomatic and trade discussions with the United States regarding proposed tariff actions under Section 301 of the US Trade Act while simultaneously working toward a broader bilateral trade framework aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) recently completed investigations covering 60 economies, including India. The review focused on policies adopted by these nations that affect the import of certain goods into their domestic markets. As a result of these investigations, the USTR has suggested imposing additional duties on imports from the economies involved.
However, the proposed measures have not yet been finalized. Products already subject to Section 232 tariffs, along with several other categories, have been excluded from the latest proposal. The USTR has opened a consultation process, allowing businesses, industry groups, and other stakeholders to provide feedback before any final action is taken.
Interested parties can request participation in public hearings through June 22, while written submissions will be accepted until July 6. The hearings are expected to take place on July 7, after which US authorities will review testimony, comments, and recommendations before making a final determination on the proposed tariffs.
The Indian government emphasized that it remains actively involved in the consultation process and is maintaining communication with US officials regarding the ongoing proceedings. At the same time, both countries are pursuing discussions aimed at finalizing a trade framework agreement that was announced earlier this year and reinforced through a joint statement issued by the two governments.
The parallel negotiations reflect a broader effort by New Delhi and Washington to expand commercial cooperation and address longstanding trade concerns through dialogue rather than confrontation. Officials from both sides have been engaged in several rounds of talks focused on improving market access, reducing trade barriers, and strengthening supply chain partnerships.
The proposed framework is expected to include an early harvest arrangement as well as longer-term measures designed to deepen economic collaboration. Discussions have also addressed tariff-related issues and non-tariff obstacles that affect trade flows between the two countries.
India has reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement throughout the consultation process while continuing efforts to secure a comprehensive bilateral trade framework that supports mutual economic growth and closer commercial relations.
