India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Russia’s National Space Centre in Moscow on Friday, accompanied by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, in a significant engagement highlighting expanding India-Russia cooperation in space and security domains. The visit included technical tours, high-level discussions, and a live interaction with astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
At the space centre, which is associated with the legacy of pioneering Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, Doval explored several advanced exhibits showcasing Russia’s space capabilities. These included models of a high-powered four-chamber liquid rocket engine and structural designs of the proposed Russian Orbital Station. The visit provided a detailed look into Russia’s ongoing advancements in space exploration technology.
Officials from Roscosmos, Russia’s state space agency, noted that the delegation also toured the Joint Industry Information Center. This facility is designed to process and analyze large-scale data related to the space and rocket industry while also playing a role in managing future orbital infrastructure projects, including Russia’s planned orbital station.
A key highlight of the visit was a live video interaction between Ajit Doval and Russian astronauts currently stationed on the International Space Station. The crew members—Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, Andrey Fedyaev, and Sergey Mikayev—shared updates about their recent spacewalk conducted on May 27, offering insights into ongoing scientific activities in orbit.
During the visit, Doval and Manturov also examined historical and symbolic artifacts, including a vehicle associated with Soviet space pioneer Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel into space in 1961. Images from the visit gained attention on social media, reflecting public interest in the high-profile diplomatic engagement.
The discussions at the space centre also focused on strengthening India-Russia cooperation in space technology and exploration. The engagement comes as Doval continues his visit to Moscow for a major international security forum and the 14th Meeting of High Representatives for Security Matters, hosted by Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu.
On Thursday, addressing representatives from multiple countries, Doval emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency in the global fight against terrorism. He stated that nations must avoid double standards and take firm action against those who support or sponsor terrorism.
He also highlighted concerns related to West Asia, stressing the importance of ensuring safe and uninterrupted maritime trade routes, including strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
Doval also held bilateral discussions with Shoigu on strengthening cooperation in defence, energy, and economic sectors, along with preparations for the upcoming BRICS NSA meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi. He is expected to continue additional bilateral meetings during his Moscow visit.
