India and Canada are showing fresh momentum in rebuilding their economic relationship, with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal urging companies from both nations to expand commercial cooperation during a major business event held in Toronto.
Speaking at the Ministerial Plenary Session titled “From Political Reset to Commercial Delivery,” Goyal appeared alongside Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu and highlighted the strong economic compatibility shared by the two countries. He said India and Canada have significant potential to deepen their partnership and unlock new opportunities for growth across several industries.
Goyal pointed out that India had sent its largest-ever overseas business delegation to Toronto, describing the move as a strong signal of New Delhi’s determination to strengthen economic engagement with Canada. The delegation included representatives from different sectors, trade organizations, and regions across India, demonstrating widespread interest in expanding business ties.
Beginning his speech with greetings in multiple Indian languages, the minister described diversity as one of the defining strengths of the India-Canada relationship. He noted that both countries are vibrant democracies whose people and businesses continue to trust each other and remain interested in closer collaboration.
According to Goyal, the relationship between the two nations is rooted in democratic values, strong institutions, and respect for the rule of law. He stressed that these shared principles create a stable platform for long-term trade and investment cooperation.
Referring indirectly to recent diplomatic tensions, Goyal compared international partnerships to lasting personal relationships that require patience, trust, and continued effort. He explained that disagreements and misunderstandings are natural, but strong relationships must be carefully maintained over time.
The minister said the two-day business gathering should serve as a message of friendship, mutual respect, and confidence between India and Canada. He also compared Toronto with Mumbai, calling both cities major commercial and financial centers that play important roles in driving their national economies.
After the event, Goyal stated on social media that he had invited Canadian businesses to become active participants in India’s expanding growth story. He also emphasized that the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or CEPA, could become an important driver for increasing bilateral trade and investment.
India and Canada continue to hold important economic interests in sectors including technology, agriculture, education, energy, and critical minerals. Although discussions surrounding a broader trade agreement had slowed during recent diplomatic tensions, both sides now appear interested in reviving economic cooperation and strengthening long-term commercial relations.
