The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has achieved a major political milestone in Assam by crossing the 100-seat mark in the 126-member Assembly, putting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on course for a historic third consecutive term in office.
As counting continued on Monday, the BJP and its allies established a commanding lead across the state, significantly outperforming the Congress-led opposition alliance. Early trends and seat tallies indicated a decisive mandate in favor of the NDA, reinforcing the BJP’s strong political presence in Northeast India.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, contesting from the Jalukbari constituency, maintained a comfortable lead throughout the counting process. Party leaders described the outcome as a strong endorsement of the BJP government’s development agenda, welfare programs, and governance model implemented over the past several years.
The NDA’s impressive performance is also being viewed as a rare example of an incumbent alliance successfully overcoming anti-incumbency sentiment at a time when several ruling parties in other states faced strong electoral challenges. Political observers noted that the BJP’s campaign strategy focused heavily on infrastructure growth, welfare delivery, regional identity, and law-and-order issues.
The opposition Congress alliance struggled to gain momentum despite an aggressive campaign. While Congress retained leads in a limited number of constituencies, the gap between the ruling alliance and the opposition widened steadily as counting progressed.
BJP leaders credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and Himanta Biswa Sarma’s popularity for the alliance’s success. Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia thanked voters for what he described as a historic mandate and promised that the government would continue working to fulfill commitments made during the campaign.
The election result is expected to further strengthen the BJP’s influence across the Northeast region, where the party has expanded rapidly over the past decade. Analysts believe the outcome also highlights the effectiveness of the BJP’s organizational network and alliance management in Assam.
With the NDA crossing the symbolic 100-seat mark, the result is being seen as one of the party’s strongest performances in the state’s electoral history. The victory cements Himanta Biswa Sarma’s position as one of the BJP’s most influential regional leaders and marks another significant chapter in Assam’s political landscape.
