In a meaningful diplomatic development, Haji Syed Salman Chishty, a senior cleric from Ajmer Sharif and Chairman of the Chishty Foundation, met Neelam Rani, India’s Consul General in St. Petersburg, during his official visit to Russia. The visit included engagements in both St. Petersburg and Moscow, where discussions focused on expanding bilateral ties through culture, spirituality, and public engagement.
The interaction highlighted the need to move beyond traditional pillars such as defense and trade, and instead strengthen relations through shared cultural and civilizational values. Both sides agreed that people-driven initiatives can play a vital role in shaping long-term cooperation between the two nations.
Several collaborative ideas were explored, including organizing cultural festivals, Sufi music and qawwali performances, classical art exchanges, and curated exhibitions showcasing shared traditions. A strong emphasis was placed on building interfaith dialogue platforms and encouraging spiritual cooperation to deepen mutual understanding.
Chishty noted that the Sufi philosophy of “peace with all” aligns well with Russia’s diverse religious and cultural fabric. Regions like Tatarstan, Dagestan, Bashkortostan, and the Caucasus were identified as areas with strong Sufi roots, offering promising opportunities for collaboration. Both parties discussed the possibility of structured interfaith dialogues, academic exchanges, and joint spiritual delegations to turn these ideas into action.
The meeting also stressed the importance of strengthening connections at the grassroots level. Youth exchange programs, academic partnerships, and cultural immersion initiatives were identified as key focus areas to broaden engagement beyond official diplomatic channels.
In addition, the conversation touched upon the historical intellectual connections between India and Russia. References were made to Leo Tolstoy’s interest in Indian philosophy and the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Russian thinkers, highlighting the deep cultural ties shared by both nations.
Chishty appreciated Neelam Rani’s diplomatic approach rooted in India’s civilizational values and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting peace and harmony globally. The Consul General welcomed the initiative and expressed support for efforts that enhance cultural understanding and strengthen people-to-people ties between India and Russia.
