Senior officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and ambassadors from Nordic nations recently met in New Delhi to explore opportunities for expanding cooperation across several key sectors. The discussions focused on strengthening partnerships in areas such as trade, investment, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, renewable energy, clean technologies, Arctic research, and space collaboration.
The meeting took place during a luncheon hosted by Sibi George, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, for ambassadors representing the Nordic region. According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the dialogue emphasized deepening India’s engagement with Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Officials also highlighted the importance of leveraging emerging trade frameworks, including the proposed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement and the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.
The Nordic ambassadors acknowledged that both regions have significant opportunities to collaborate economically and technologically. Denmark’s Ambassador to India, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, noted that the partnership between India and Nordic countries could grow substantially as global trade agreements create new economic openings. He remarked that collaboration between India’s approximately $4 trillion economy and the Nordic region’s combined economy of around $2 trillion offers strong potential for mutual growth and innovation.
Recent high-level visits have further reinforced this growing relationship. Earlier in the month, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb visited India on a state trip that marked an important milestone in bilateral relations. During the visit, India and Finland elevated their ties to a “Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability,” highlighting shared priorities in technology-driven development and sustainable solutions.
President Stubb also attended the Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi between March 5 and March 7, where global leaders and policymakers discussed international security, diplomacy, and economic cooperation. During his visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Stubb explored possibilities for expanding collaboration in several fields, including trade, infrastructure, defense, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, education, and space technologies.
The discussions highlighted the growing role of India-Nordic partnerships in emerging industries and sustainable development. Both sides expressed interest in strengthening collaboration that promotes innovation, technological advancement, and economic growth.
Officials believe that continued dialogue between India and the Nordic region will further enhance cooperation in advanced technologies, environmental solutions, and trade partnerships while supporting broader engagement between India and Europe.
