A prominent gathering of Indian-American leaders, cultural advocates, and community representatives took place in New York City during a special meet-and-greet event featuring former Indian Union Minister Smriti Irani. The program was organized at the Romanti Auditorium of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan USA and highlighted the contributions of the Indian diaspora in strengthening cultural and community connections in the United States.
The evening was hosted by Dr. Navin Mehta, Chairman of Bhavan USA – Institute of Indian Culture, along with Dr. H. R. Shah, recipient of the Padma Shri honor and Chairman and CEO of TV Asia, who also serves as Chairman Emeritus of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan USA. Their leadership played a central role in bringing together distinguished members of the Indian-American community for a celebration of cultural engagement and leadership.
The event opened with an impressive classical music performance that set the tone for the evening’s cultural celebration. The musical segment featured a rare instrumental presentation of the Hansaveena by renowned musician Ramanan Venkatraman, accompanied by tabla artist Aditya Phatak. Organized by the Sneh Arts Foundation, the performance showcased the richness of Indian classical music traditions and captivated the audience.
Several influential leaders and representatives from prominent organizations attended the gathering. Among them were Pragya Singh from the Consulate of India, Dr. Raj Bhayani representing the National Alliance of Indian Organizations, Dr. Hetal Gor from the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, and Mohan Wanchoo from the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation. Other notable attendees included Megha Bhouraskar and Ravi Iyer from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Saurin Parikh from the Federation of Indian Associations, Prakash Shah from the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, and Natwar Thakkar of Roshni Productions.
The formal proceedings began with welcoming remarks delivered by Minesh Patel, Chief Operating Officer of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan USA, who greeted guests and acknowledged the presence of various community leaders and organizations.
During her address, Smriti Irani spoke about her longstanding association with Dr. H. R. Shah and TV Asia, while also highlighting the role of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan USA in preserving Indian cultural traditions among the diaspora. She emphasized the organization’s efforts in promoting cultural awareness and strengthening bonds between India and the United States.
Irani also discussed the vision of the National Alliance of Indian Organizations and praised the Indian-American community for its dedication to public service, cultural preservation, and community development. She highlighted the increasing participation of women in leadership roles and recognized progress being made in key areas such as education and healthcare.
The gathering ultimately served as a platform to celebrate cultural pride, community leadership, and the expanding influence of the Indian diaspora across the United States.
