Kochi, Jan 17 – Indian American community leader Andrew Pappachen was honored with the 2025 Good Samaritan Award by the Global Malayalee Christian Forum at a ceremony held at the Kochi Ramada Inn. The award recognized over three decades of dedicated service to the Indian diaspora, celebrating his leadership and commitment to community development.
In a separate event, Pappachen was felicitated by his former classmates and professors from CMS College, Kottayam. The gathering highlighted his impact on the global Malayalee community, with mentors and friends presenting him with a ceremonial shawl as a mark of respect and admiration. Renowned personalities, including Prof. S. Sivadas, Rev. Dr. K.M. George, and several faculty members, took part in honoring his contributions.
Born in Kerala, Pappachen earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Kerala University before moving to the United States in 1973. He further pursued a master’s in Environmental Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, and completed doctoral studies, along with specialized Mini Masters Degrees in Water and Air Pollution and Public Administration at Rutgers University.
His professional career spans 47 years in government service, including key roles in Newark, New Jersey, such as Chief Engineer, Director of Operations for the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corporation, and Director of Public Works. From 2012 to 2019, he served as Environmental Commissioner in Montville Township. Currently, he works as an Environmental Consultant and is a certified water system operator, while also teaching as an Adjunct Professor on water treatment and environmental regulations.
Pappachen is a prolific author with multiple English and Malayalam publications, including titles like Love With The Ghost and Thalamurakalethedi. Beyond academia, he has held leadership positions in the World Malayalee Council, Kerala Center New York, Asia Society, and other cultural organizations. He also founded the World Malayalee Voice, promoting community engagement and cultural preservation.
Married to Somini, Pappachen is a proud father of two, Simmy and Kevin, and grandfather to Anna. His life exemplifies dedication to service, leadership, and strengthening the global Indian and Malayalee community through sustained efforts in culture, education, and public service.
