New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) — The government on Thursday reported significant progress under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), stating that 3.86 crore houses have been sanctioned and 2.92 crore houses completed against the cumulative target of 4.14 crore homes allotted to states and union territories as of December 9, 2025.
PMAY-G, a flagship programme of the government, aims to achieve the objective of ‘Housing for All’ in rural India by providing 4.95 crore pucca houses with basic amenities by 2029. The scheme focuses on aiding houseless households and those living in kutcha or dilapidated houses through convergence with other welfare programmes
Initially, the target under the scheme was to assist in the construction of 2.95 crore houses by March 2024. To meet the rising demand due to increasing rural families, the Union Cabinet on August 9, 2024, approved extending the programme to construct an additional 2 crore rural houses between fiscal 2024-25 and 2028-29.
The Ministry of Rural Development informed that 4,71,486 houses were sanctioned and 2,42,811 completed across states and UTs as of the reporting date. From January 1, 2025, to date, 1,24,204 houses were sanctioned and 1,71,719 completed under the scheme.
PMAY-G also supports the PM-JANMAN scheme, approved to achieve saturation of housing and basic facilities for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) families, with interventions covered under the rural housing programme.
The housing initiative is complemented by broader rural development efforts, including connectivity and livelihood schemes aimed at uplifting rural communities across India.
