Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for the region’s aviation sector. Constructed at an investment of $480 million, this terminal stands out as India’s first nature-themed airport, blending modern infrastructure with elements inspired by the region’s environment.
The inauguration ceremony included Modi’s visit to the terminal and the unveiling of an 80-foot statue of Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bardoloi, situated just outside the airport. Designed to accommodate over 13 million passengers annually, it now holds the distinction of being the largest airport terminal in India’s northeastern states.
Officials noted that the total project investment amounts to $600 million, which includes $120 million dedicated to maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. The airport is envisioned as a key aviation hub for Northeast India and a strategic gateway connecting the region to Southeast Asia.
The terminal was developed by Adani Airports Holdings Limited and incorporates local cultural motifs, featuring bamboo structures and orchid-inspired designs that reflect Assam’s heritage. The project required extensive collaboration between the central and state governments to ensure seamless execution.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma approved $14 million for upgrading approach roads leading to the terminal and oversaw project readiness and facilities. Ahead of the launch, PM Modi shared a glimpse of the terminal on social media, describing it as a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure” that will enhance living standards, stimulate commerce, and attract tourism to the region.
This development reinforces Assam’s position as an emerging aviation and tourism hub, combining innovative design with strategic connectivity to strengthen economic and regional growth.
