In anticipation of the global peace summit scheduled for June 15-16 in Switzerland, Ukraine seeks to garner international support for its peace initiatives. The Ambassador confirmed India’s participation in the summit, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent affirmation of India’s presence, contingent upon logistical considerations and concurrent commitments.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy extended a cordial invitation to Prime Minister Modi during a bilateral phone conversation, expressing eagerness for a visit at a convenient time. The Ambassador expressed optimism about the prospect of Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Ukraine, signaling a strengthening of bilateral relations.
Amid ongoing conflict, the Ambassador acknowledged India’s supportive stance towards Ukraine, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. He highlighted the potential for high-level exchanges between the two nations, suggesting a positive trajectory for bilateral cooperation and support.
Furthermore, the Ambassador congratulated Prime Minister Modi on his electoral victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, commending his leadership and vision for India’s future. However, the decision regarding India’s participation in the peace summit remains pending, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson.
In contrast, while the United States Vice President Kamala Harris confirmed participation in the summit, China’s attendance remains uncertain, with indications suggesting potential non-participation. Russia has explicitly declined participation, dismissing the summit as aligned with President Zelenskyy’s peace agenda.
The summit aims to garner diplomatic backing for Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan, focusing on crucial aspects such as territorial integrity, energy security, and humanitarian concerns. It represents a significant milestone in Ukraine’s peace initiative, following earlier conferences aimed at resolving the protracted conflict.
