India has appointed seasoned diplomat Vikram K Doraiswami as its next Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs, indicating that he will assume his new role shortly.
A 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Doraiswami brings extensive diplomatic experience and deep familiarity with China-related affairs. He is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a position he has held since August 2022. Prior to this, he also served as High Commissioner to Bangladesh, further strengthening India’s regional diplomatic footprint.
Doraiswami’s early career included postings in Hong Kong and Beijing, where he developed expertise in Chinese language and regional dynamics. His tenure in China during the 1990s provided him with firsthand exposure to the country’s political and economic landscape, experience that is expected to prove valuable in his new assignment.
Over the years, he has held several key positions, including roles at the Prime Minister’s Office and India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. He has also served as Consul General in Johannesburg and later as Ambassador to Uzbekistan and South Korea, reflecting a diverse and accomplished diplomatic career.
The appointment comes at a time when India and China continue to navigate a complex relationship shaped by strategic, economic, and geopolitical factors. Doraiswami’s experience and diplomatic background are expected to play a crucial role in managing bilateral ties and advancing India’s interests in the region.
His appointment underscores New Delhi’s emphasis on deploying experienced diplomats in key global capitals, particularly in regions of strategic importance.
