As Ramzan continues to be observed globally, communities across New York City are coming together for Iftar meals with family and friends. This year, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the occasion with a special visit to celebrity chef Vikas Khanna at his acclaimed Bungalow restaurant.
During the evening, Khanna personally prepared the Mayor’s Iftar, creating a meaningful culinary experience that went beyond food. The visit also rekindled memories dating back more than two decades. Sharing the moment on Instagram, Khanna posted a photograph of Mamdani alongside himself and the restaurant staff, captioning it, “Welcoming the Mayor of New York City to break the fast with our team at Bungalow. I cooked some of his favorite dishes from 25+ years ago at Salaam Bombay.”
Earlier in March, Khanna also shared a reel showing the preparations for Mamdani’s visit. While the restaurant’s routine remained largely unchanged, the occasion held deeper significance for Khanna, evoking memories of his early culinary journey. In a heartfelt note, Khanna recalled meeting Mamdani as a young child in 2001, when he had just overcome homelessness and left an abusive job to begin working at Salaam Bombay in Tribeca.
“It was in 2001 when I first met Zohran Mamdani,” Khanna wrote. “I had just survived homelessness, left a very abusive job, and started at Salaam Bombay. I loved the name, inspired by the iconic Mira Nair film.” Khanna recounted how Mira Nair herself visited the restaurant with her eight-year-old son Zohran, offering encouragement that would remain impactful throughout his career. Over the years, Khanna maintained a connection with the family and even catered events for them.
Vikas Khanna’s journey from his humble beginnings in Amritsar to becoming a globally recognized chef is truly remarkable. He has played a pivotal role in introducing Indian cuisine to the United States and has cooked for prominent figures including Barack Obama, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Dalai Lama. His work continues to inspire, combining culinary excellence with a deep personal narrative of resilience and success.
