India’s inaugural semi-high-speed rail service, Vande Bharat, achieves a significant milestone with over twenty million passengers boarding it by March 31, since its inception. Launched in 2019 between Delhi and Varanasi, these trains, crafted domestically by Indian Railways, offer a seamless travel experience.
On Monday, Indian Railways commemorated its 171st anniversary, tracing back to the historic inaugural journey from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. The officials reflect on the extraordinary journey of Indian Railways, which now extends its reach to far-flung corners of the country.
Vande Bharat, renowned for its high-speed, safety, and top-notch services, now spans over 100 additional routes, covering 24 states, union territories, and 284 districts. Its cumulative mileage equals circling the Earth approximately 310 times, showcasing its widespread impact.
The initiative has garnered popularity, especially among the youth, for its aircraft-style comfort and amenities like soundproof coaches, pantry services, panoramic windows, Wi-Fi, and GPS-based information systems.
Looking ahead, Indian Railways plans to introduce a sleeper version of Vande Bharat, utilizing distributed power technology. This expansion aims to offer a novel experience, particularly for long-distance commuters, heralding a new era in rail travel.
