US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a significant visit to China on June 18, marking the highest-level trip by a US official in almost five years. The purpose of this visit was to ease the escalating tensions between the rival powers.
Although neither side anticipates major breakthroughs during Blinken’s two-day visit, as the world’s two largest economies, they remain at odds on various issues ranging from trade and technology to regional security. However, both countries have expressed an increasing interest in pursuing greater stability, recognizing a limited timeframe before upcoming elections in both the United States and Taiwan. The self-ruling democracy of Taiwan is a subject of concern as Beijing has not ruled out the possibility of using force to assert control over it.
