The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has revealed in its latest report that the United States dominated India’s Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) landscape in FY24. By March 31, 2024, the number of registered FPIs in India had risen to 11,219, marking a slight increase from 11,081 in the previous year. Among these, the United States led the way with 3,457 registered investors, followed by Luxembourg with 1,393 and Canada with 804.
The report also delved into the Assets Under Custody (AUC) held by FPIs, which saw a substantial increase. As of March 31, 2024, the AUC surged by 42.8% to reach US$ 828.17 billion (Rs. 69.5 lakh crore), up from US$ 580.31 billion (Rs. 48.7 lakh crore) the year before. This growth reflects a significant boost in foreign investor confidence in India’s markets. Notably, equity assets made up 92.2% of the total AUC, with the United States contributing 39.2%, followed by Singapore at 9.8% and Luxembourg at 7.1%. SEBI also highlighted that FPI inflows for 2023-24 were the highest since 1992-93, emphasizing the critical role of foreign portfolio and venture capital investments in driving India’s economic growth.
