President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris joined Americans across the nation in celebrating Diwali, with temples and prominent sites adorned in lights. “This Diwali, may we highlight the strength of unity, truth, and freedom, creating a future where anything is achievable,” Biden shared in a social media post on X. Earlier, Biden hosted an unprecedented Diwali gathering at the White House, inviting around 600 prominent Indian-Americans to mark the festival.
Vice President Harris also shared Diwali wishes, celebrating from the campaign trail and reflecting on the symbolism of light overcoming darkness and knowledge triumphing over ignorance. Previously, Harris had hosted Diwali festivities at her official residence but was unable to this year due to her busy campaign schedule.
Secretary of State Tony Blinken added that Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness and reminds everyone of their potential to bring light to their communities. “Families worldwide – including millions in the United States – are celebrating together by sharing sweets, lighting diyas, and decorating homes,” Blinken said, noting that diversity is a cornerstone of America’s strength.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz marked the occasion with a visit to the Bharatiya Temple in Pennsylvania, where he participated in a diya lighting ceremony and received blessings. Reflecting on the sense of community, Walz extended Diwali wishes to all, highlighting the significance of peace and unity, while affirming his support for Harris as the next US president. He emphasized her commitment to lowering costs and supporting small businesses for South Asian Americans.
A reception by the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) was held at the Kennedy Center, underscoring the importance of cultural ties and mutual support. Celebrations were widespread, with Google CEO Sundar Pichai also sharing his greetings, wishing everyone a Diwali filled with joy and light. This year’s Diwali celebrations across the US emphasized both cultural unity and shared values as leaders connected with Indian-American communities across the country.
