Indian-American lawmaker Shri Thanedar has raised alarms over the ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, urging the US government to take immediate action. Speaking on the floor of the US House of Representatives, Thanedar condemned the attacks on Hindu temples and religious practitioners, calling on Congress and the US government to use all available measures to stop these atrocities.
Thanedar referenced the history of violence against minorities in Bangladesh since its independence in 1971, highlighting recent incidents such as the arrest of a Hindu priest and the murder of his lawyer. The lawmaker expressed concern that the situation has worsened following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
In response to the rising tensions, the White House confirmed that President Joe Biden is monitoring the situation closely. National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby stated that the US is working with Bangladesh’s interim government to enhance law enforcement and security measures to protect religious and ethnic minorities.
Furthermore, Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to make the violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, a key issue during the confirmation hearing of Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State.
A recent protest by Indian-Americans, who marched from the White House to the US Capitol, demonstrated widespread concern over the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
