Responding to queries about alleged efforts from certain groups in the US to influence India’s democracy by funding opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Miller stated he couldn’t confirm specific reports but reiterated the US government’s clear stance on celebrating India’s democratic process. He emphasized that while the US does not intervene in electoral outcomes, it supports the democratic rights of the Indian people to determine their leadership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured a third term following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where his coalition, primarily led by the BJP, secured a majority with support from parties like JD(U) and TDP. The elections, conducted in seven phases from April 19, culminated in vote counting on June 4.
According to the Election Commission of India, BJP secured 240 seats, while Congress made significant gains with 99 seats. The INDIA bloc, surpassing 230 seats, posed strong competition despite initial predictions.
US President Joe Biden congratulated PM Modi and the NDA coalition on their victory, underscoring the growing friendship between the US and India as they look towards a collaborative future. In his statement, Biden celebrated the nearly 650 million voters who participated in the historic election, highlighting the deepening bilateral partnership.
Following a phone conversation between the two leaders on June 5, PM Modi expressed gratitude for Biden’s warm felicitations and appreciation for Indian democracy.
