Before the 10th International Day of Yoga, the Indian Embassy in the US facilitated a yoga session in Washington, DC, setting the stage for upcoming celebrations. The event, held at The Wharf, saw a significant turnout of participants on Thursday. Sripriya Ranganathan, Deputy Ambassador of the Indian embassy in the US, emphasized India’s pivotal role in elevating yoga to global prominence, including its recognition by the United Nations in 2014.
Ranganathan underscored yoga’s ancient origins dating back 5000-6000 years while highlighting its enduring relevance in contemporary times. She noted a widespread acknowledgment of yoga’s value across families, communities, and institutions, helping individuals cope with modern challenges. She observed a growing engagement among young people and students in embracing yoga as a comprehensive wellness tradition beyond physical fitness.
Regarding this year’s celebrations, Ranganathan mentioned collaborations with various US organizations, extending the festivities throughout the month. She emphasized that the initiative aims not only to celebrate yoga on a single day but also to integrate it deeply into community engagement initiatives across the country.
Michael, a participant at the yoga session, expressed enthusiasm about marking the 10th International Day of Yoga, describing it as a celebration of community and culture. He highlighted yoga’s role in achieving inner peace and harmony, echoing the theme of “Yoga for Self and Society” for this year’s commemoration.
