External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed strong optimism about the continued progress of India-US relations, highlighting the solid foundation established by previous administrations and the positive rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to assume office soon.
During a press conference in Madrid alongside Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, Jaishankar highlighted the dynamic growth in India-US ties. “India-US relations have seen remarkable progress across multiple dimensions. Given our track record and the close contacts between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, we are confident that this relationship will continue to thrive. I will represent India at President-elect Trump’s inauguration,” he stated.
Jaishankar also underscored India’s rising engagement with the Mediterranean region, noting that India’s trade with the area has reached $80 billion annually. He emphasized India’s commitment to enhancing its presence in the Mediterranean and highlighted Spain’s crucial role in this endeavor.
“India’s interest in the Mediterranean is significant, with annual trade amounting to $80 billion. In the coming years, India will become more visible in this region, and we look forward to Spain’s support in this process,” he remarked.
Amid global uncertainty, Jaishankar stressed the importance of collaboration among nations with shared values and interests. He expressed confidence that stronger ties between India and Spain, coupled with enhanced cooperation between India and the European Union, could bring stability in turbulent times.
“The world is increasingly volatile, making it essential for like-minded countries to work together. Strengthened India-Spain relations and India-EU partnerships can play a vital role in fostering stability,” Jaishankar added.
This marks Jaishankar’s first official visit to Spain as India’s Foreign Minister, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs.
