Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian-American and Republican party figure, sharply criticized President Joe Biden and the Democratic party following the first presidential debate on July 27. On X (formerly Twitter), Ramaswamy, a supporter of Republican candidate Donald Trump, focused his critique on Biden’s age and perceived lapses during the debate. He described Biden as an “old man” and accused the Democrats of presenting him as a sacrificial candidate, suggesting Biden appeared disconnected and rambling during his speeches.
In addition to questioning Biden’s performance, Ramaswamy expressed skepticism about the Democratic nominee’s focus during the debate, particularly contrasting it with issues he believed were more relevant to Americans. His posts underscored a belief that Biden’s portrayal did not align with the priorities of voters.
Born in Ohio to immigrant parents from southern India, Ramaswamy, 38, has a background as a multimillionaire former biotech executive. He was raised Hindu, attended a Roman Catholic high school, and pursued higher education at Harvard University and Yale Law School. Despite his Hindu upbringing, Ramaswamy has emphasized “Christian values” and “Judeo-Christian values” in his political rhetoric, positioning himself as an American nationalist.
The debate between Biden and Trump, hosted by CNN in Atlanta and moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, marked the earliest general election debate in U.S. history. In a departure from tradition, the debate had no live audience and featured muted microphones during non-speaking turns, reflecting efforts to maintain order after the chaotic 2020 matchups.
Trump’s campaign has consistently highlighted concerns about Biden’s age and stamina, while Biden’s camp has sought to manage expectations and portray him as capable and prepared. The debate provided a platform for both candidates to address key issues, including the economy and immigration, amidst ongoing political scrutiny and strategic maneuvering ahead of the election.
