Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has committed to implementing stricter security measures at the border and reforming America’s immigration system, aiming to counter frequent political attacks from her Republican rival, Donald Trump, as the November election approaches.
Harris made these remarks during her visit to the US-Mexico border in Douglas, Arizona, on Friday. While adopting a firm stance on border security, she also advocated for a “pathway to citizenship” for undocumented migrants currently residing in the U.S.
Harris stated, “As President, I will collaborate with Congress to finally establish a pathway to citizenship for dedicated immigrants who have lived here for many years.”
Her visit aimed to provide a firsthand assessment of the security situation at the southern border. Harris criticized former President Trump, asserting that politicians have failed to collaborate in addressing the broken immigration system.
Illegal immigration has become a growing concern among Americans, with record levels of migrant crossings reported at the southern border. Harris emphasized her commitment to setting aside politics to resolve these persistent issues, stating, “These issues are highly consequential for our nation.”
Harris, 59, will face off against Trump, 78, in the presidential election scheduled for November 5. She highlighted the clear contrast in the upcoming election, framing it as a choice between practical solutions and traditional political maneuvering.
During Trump’s presidency, Harris claimed he made no efforts to rectify the immigration system, citing a lack of immigration judges, border agents, lawful pathways, and effective asylum processes. She accused Trump of opting to capitalize on the problem instead of finding solutions.
She asserted, “The American people deserve a President who prioritizes border security over engaging in political maneuvers.”
Having served as the Attorney General of California, Harris expressed her understanding of the importance of border security, highlighting her efforts to prosecute transnational criminal organizations involved in trafficking drugs and humans. She outlined her plan to address the global fentanyl supply chain and mitigate the flow of precursor chemicals from China to protect Americans.
Harris stated, “I speak for all communities in our nation seeking solutions to these issues: We cannot accept Donald Trump’s lack of leadership,” calling for constructive answers instead of blaming others.
In response, Trump criticized Harris for her delayed visit to the border, remarking, “This is bad timing for Kamala to show up today at the border. She didn’t go there for four years.”
Trump accused Harris of failing to uphold her oath, claiming she allowed violent gangs to take over cities and neglected American communities. He stated that her actions are “unforgivable” and labeled them a crime against national sovereignty.
