External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, alongside US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, inaugurated the new US Consulate in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in India-US relations. Emphasizing the consulate’s importance, Jaishankar also announced India’s plans to open a consulate in Los Angeles, Garcetti’s hometown.
“Bengaluru’s prominence made it imperative to establish a permanent US diplomatic presence here. This has been a long-awaited step,” Jaishankar stated, adding that consulates play a critical role in fostering travel and collaboration.
In his speech, Jaishankar stressed the evolving India-US partnership, highlighting Bengaluru’s role in maximizing the relationship’s potential. He expressed hope for more countries establishing consulates in Bengaluru, aligning with India’s broader diplomatic goals.
Jaishankar outlined key areas of bilateral cooperation, particularly in technology-driven sectors like artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, space, and drones. He noted the transformation in defense collaboration, pointing out India’s use of American equipment such as C-17s, C-130s, Chinooks, and Apaches, which was minimal two decades ago.
Education and research were also highlighted as crucial pillars of the partnership. Jaishankar envisioned increased collaboration through joint campuses, student exchanges, and a stronger American educational presence in the region.
The formal opening of the consulate, Jaishankar remarked, is a testament to overcoming historical hesitations and building a robust, forward-looking partnership between the two nations.
