Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi called on Indian Americans to actively confront growing prejudice and bigotry by speaking up, building coalitions, and deepening political engagement. Speaking at the India Abroad® Dialogue in Chicago, he warned that silence could leave the community vulnerable as anti-Indian sentiment rises and political violence escalates.
Krishnamoorthi shared personal experiences with hate speech, including a Florida official’s call for his deportation, which he countered with composure and defiance. He outlined three key strategies for the community: first, to speak up against bigotry and prejudice; second, to show solidarity by defending others facing discrimination; and third, to ensure active political participation, emphasizing that without a voice, the community risks marginalization.
Addressing broader safety concerns, Krishnamoorthi highlighted the prevalence of gun violence, citing daily mass shootings, and advocated for common-sense gun regulations coupled with improved mental health support. He stressed the importance of responsible political rhetoric, noting that words influence actions and can help reduce societal tensions.
Longtime community leader Dr Bharat Barai added that legal immigration is increasingly questioned by some political voices, calling this disturbing. He affirmed that Indian Americans are law-abiding citizens who contribute significantly to the US economy, education, and healthcare, and encouraged continued leadership in fields such as medicine, technology, and commerce.
The discussion also addressed the impact of online misinformation and coordinated propaganda campaigns. Ankit Jain from the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) noted the prevalence of artificial negativity online, which fuels misperceptions about the community.
Indian Americans remain one of the most educated and economically successful immigrant groups in the United States. As political polarization intensifies, community leaders stress the need for sustained civic engagement, solidarity, and proactive measures to safeguard rights, representation, and social cohesion.
