The United States has declared its unwavering support for India following the tragic terrorist strike in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, the majority of whom were tourists. Reinforcing the administration’s position, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated during Friday’s briefing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the Trump administration’s full support.
Tammy Bruce emphasized the US-India alliance by stating, “As President Donald Trump told Prime Minister Modi last week, the United States stands strongly with India in its fight against terrorism,” highlighting their shared commitment to countering security challenges.
Bruce further noted that Washington is maintaining active communication with both New Delhi and Islamabad amid growing tensions post-attack. “The Secretary has encouraged both nations to seek a measured resolution that ensures enduring peace and long-term stability in South Asia,” she added, correcting her earlier phrase to emphasize “resolution” over “solution.”
Ongoing diplomatic discussions are taking place at several levels within the US government. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly held direct talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
When asked about progress on US-led calls for de-escalation, Bruce simply reiterated the American expectation for a responsible and peaceful approach from both sides, offering no further details.
In the aftermath of the April 22 attack, India has initiated several countermeasures. These include suspending the Indus Water Treaty, closing the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and reducing the diplomatic staff strength of Pakistan’s High Commission. The Indian military has also retaliated against repeated ceasefire violations across the Line of Control, particularly in sectors like Kupwara, Poonch, Tutmari Gali, and Rampur.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth spoke with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to offer condolences and solidarity. “I conveyed my deepest condolences and reiterated our commitment to stand with the people of India,” Hegseth posted on X (formerly Twitter).
India’s Jaishankar also held talks with Secretary Rubio, underlining the importance of holding accountable those responsible, including the perpetrators, financiers, and planners of the attack.
