The United States government has approved an amended foreign air carrier permit for Air India, enabling the airline to operate a wider range of passenger, cargo, and charter flights between India and the United States. The decision was issued by the US Department of Transportation after a review process during which no objections were submitted by stakeholders.
Officials had previously invited interested parties to raise concerns within a twenty one day window if they disagreed with the proposal to grant Air India expanded operating authority. Since no responses were received during that period, the Department confirmed its earlier decision and formally granted the updated permit along with the conditions attached to it.
Under the new authorization, Air India can conduct scheduled international services transporting passengers, cargo, and mail between the two countries. The permit also allows flights that originate from locations beyond India, pass through India, and continue to destinations in the United States and other international locations.
In addition to passenger operations, the updated permit allows the airline to operate regular cargo flights connecting the United States with other global destinations. This flexibility strengthens Air India’s ability to expand its international logistics network and respond to growing demand in global air freight services.
The permit also includes approval for charter operations carrying passengers, cargo, and mail between India and the United States. Charter services between the United States and third countries are permitted as well, provided the flights form part of a continuous journey that is connected to India.
The amended authorization officially came into effect on March two, two thousand twenty six, after the mandatory presidential review period concluded without any objections or disapproval. This cleared the way for Air India to proceed with the expanded operational rights.
However, the airline must comply with strict regulatory conditions while operating these services. These include aviation safety and security requirements enforced by US authorities such as the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration. Air India must also maintain valid authorization from the Government of India and adhere to global aviation safety standards.
Records show that Air India had submitted its request for the amended permit and exemption authority in October two thousand twenty five. According to the Department of Transportation, the airline sought to formally incorporate operational rights that were already recognized under the bilateral air transport agreement between India and the United States.
Authorities concluded that Air India demonstrated sufficient financial stability and operational capability to manage the proposed services. They also stated that granting the authorization aligns with public interest and supports continued aviation cooperation between the two nations.
