Uruguay has expressed strong support for expanding its bilateral relationship with India, welcoming New Delhi’s plan to open an embassy in Montevideo later this year and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global leadership.
Uruguay’s Ambassador to India, Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, said the opening of an Indian embassy in Montevideo would mark an important milestone in ties between the two countries, which have completed more than seven decades of diplomatic engagement. He noted that the relationship is entering a new phase, with closer political and diplomatic coordination expected in the coming months.
The ambassador highlighted that India’s External Affairs Minister is expected to visit Uruguay for the inauguration of the embassy, underscoring the growing importance both nations place on strengthening their partnership. Currently, India’s embassy in Buenos Aires is concurrently accredited to Uruguay, while Uruguay maintains an embassy in New Delhi and an honorary consulate in Mumbai.
Praising Prime Minister Modi, Amarilla described him as a “very influential leader” on the global stage. He said the Uruguayan government appreciates India’s role in amplifying the concerns of the Global South and expressed hope that India would play an even more prominent role in shaping international discourse.
The ambassador also indicated that Uruguay is considering easing visa norms for Indian travellers to encourage greater people-to-people engagement. He said discussions on facilitating travel could be taken forward during upcoming political consultations between the two countries in New Delhi.
Reiterating Uruguay’s support for India’s aspirations at the United Nations, Amarilla confirmed that his country backs India’s bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council. While expressing reservations about expanding veto powers, he said Uruguay fully supports India’s intention to become a permanent member of the reformed Security Council.
The remarks reflect growing convergence between India and Uruguay as both countries seek to expand cooperation across diplomacy, trade and global governance platforms.
