Lord Patel of Bradford and Justine Greening have been named as the new Chancellors of the University of Southampton, marking the first occasion the university has appointed two individuals to this position. They succeed Ruby Wax, the comedian, in this ceremonial role.
The Chancellor serves as the primary lay officer of the University, with significant responsibilities including presiding over graduation ceremonies. This ambassadorial role is crucial for the ceremonial aspects of the university.
Lord Patel’s career began in social work before he transitioned into academia and government roles focused on health, education, and social care. In recognition of his contributions to ethnic minority health issues, he was awarded an OBE in 1999. In 2018, he became the Chair of Social Work England, the regulatory body for social workers in England.
Additionally, Lord Patel is the Chair of the India Business Group and has existing connections to the university as a patron of The India Centre for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development. He received an honorary degree from the university in 2018.
Lord Patel conveyed his excitement about taking on the ambassadorial role at the University of Southampton. He expressed his commitment to contributing to the university’s growth and success, emphasizing his admiration for its world-class research and global impact. Additionally, he eagerly anticipated engaging with the university’s staff, students, and alumni to deepen his understanding of the institution.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith remarked, “I look forward to working with our dual Chancellors in support of our growth and continued success. They bring expansive knowledge, insight and networks in areas of deep interest to us and a clear and welcome interest in connecting with the people who are at the heart of our world-class university.”
Sir Ian Diamond, Chair of University Council, also expressed his pleasure at the appointments: “I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Justine Greening and Lord Patel of Bradford as our dual Chancellors. They bring an extraordinary wealth of combined experience, expertise and dedication in areas such as mental health, social mobility and equality, which are also of great importance to the university community. They will each play an immensely positive role as we move forward with our ambitious strategy.”
