The University of Chicago has honored economist Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian with the Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first Indian economist to receive the distinction in the award’s eighty five year history. The award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements and global influence in their respective fields.
Subramanian served as the seventeenth Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021. During this period, he played an important role in shaping India’s economic strategy and policy direction at a time when global markets were facing significant uncertainty. Following his tenure with the Indian government, he continued contributing to international economic discussions while serving as an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund.
Responding to the recognition, Subramanian said the honor holds special meaning because the work being acknowledged was carried out in India and aimed at addressing India’s economic challenges. He noted that it was a privilege to follow the path of renowned Indian scientists and thinkers whose most impactful work was developed within the country.
The University of Chicago highlighted that Subramanian’s Economic Surveys of India were regarded as landmark documents. These reports helped shape the intellectual framework behind India’s policy focus on competitive markets, policy independence, and inclusive economic growth.
The university also noted that Subramanian was among the earliest economists to identify the COVID crisis as a supply side shock. His analysis suggested that the economy could witness a strong V shaped recovery, a view that helped strengthen confidence in India’s economic resilience during a challenging period.
During his time as Chief Economic Adviser, Subramanian authored three Economic Surveys and contributed to important macroeconomic discussions at a time of global volatility. His later role at the International Monetary Fund further allowed him to represent India’s economic perspective within international policy conversations.
With this latest recognition, Subramanian has now received distinguished alumni honors from all three institutions where he studied. These include the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, and the University of Chicago.
He currently serves as a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business and is also the author of the book India at One Hundred, which discusses the country’s economic journey and future possibilities.
