Stony Brook University in New York has recently unveiled its 2024 list of 40 Under Forty alumni honorees, with an official ceremony scheduled for October 24 at the Charles B. Wang Center as part of Homecoming week. Among the recognized individuals are two Indian-origin alumni: Dr. Amruta G. Desai in healthcare and Marvin Parasram in science and engineering.
These prestigious awards highlight outstanding young alumni who have made significant impacts as leaders within their respective fields and communities. According to the university’s statement, this year’s honorees have provided essential contributions, such as offering strategic advice to the U.S. FDA during the COVID-19 crisis, aiding veterans, working in New York State Assembly, and even participating in the Olympics.
Dr. Amruta Desai, serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook, has expertise in pain management. Her academic journey includes a medical degree from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine and advanced training from Westchester Medical Center and the University of Connecticut. She also earned both a Master’s in Public Health and an MBA from Stony Brook. Dr. Desai’s passion lies in alleviating pain in hospital and outpatient settings. Raised in Stony Brook, she has a deep connection to the area and the university, where her parents served as faculty for over 30 years.
On the science front, Dr. Marvin Parasram, currently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at NYU, is renowned for his research on developing innovative synthetic methodologies using commodity chemicals and catalysis. His research laboratory is dedicated to developing innovative chemical processes aimed at providing substantial societal benefits.
