Former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu American to serve in Congress, attended a celebration at BAPS Akshardham Temple in Robbinsville, New Jersey, on December 15, 2024, marking the 103rd birth anniversary of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Addressing an audience of about 2,000 people, Gabbard expressed admiration for the spiritual significance of the temple, highlighting the intricate carvings and sculptures that depict stories from the Bhagavad Gita.
During her visit, Gabbard discussed the importance of unity, peace, and harmony, values that she believes are essential for today’s world. She shared her thoughts on the temple’s many quotes from figures like Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein, and Abraham Lincoln, all of which were inspired by teachings from the Bhagavad Gita.
The event also included local leaders such as Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried and members of the city council, along with Suhag Shukla, co-founder of the Hindu American Foundation. Shukla praised Gabbard’s heartfelt remarks and highlighted her personal connection to the Hindu community.
BAPS also expressed its gratitude for Gabbard’s visit, noting how her experiences shaped her public service. Gabbard emphasized the importance of the freedom to worship and live authentically, a sentiment she believes is at the heart of what makes America great. She encouraged the attendees to continue sharing the values of love and light, especially in times of division.
Gabbard’s visit came during a period of her confirmation process to become the director of national intelligence under President-elect Trump. Despite facing challenges in her confirmation hearings, Gabbard remains a prominent figure in both the political and spiritual communities, advocating for peace and unity. If confirmed, she will become the first cabinet member to openly identify as a Hindu.
