As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its third day with intensifying Israeli airstrikes and retaliatory missile attacks from Tehran, former US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to declare that peace was still possible—and that he could broker it.
Trump, who is actively campaigning for a return to the White House, claimed he could secure a peace agreement between Israel and Iran, similar to what he said he achieved during his first term with historical rivals like India and Pakistan.
“Iran and Israel should make a deal—and they will make a deal—just like I got India and Pakistan to make one, using trade incentives and strong leadership,” Trump wrote on his platform, adding that talks and calls were already happening “behind the scenes.”
He referenced past conflicts where he claims his intervention prevented escalation, including the longstanding hostilities between Serbia and Kosovo and the Nile dam dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia. “There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention,” he stated, while criticizing President Joe Biden for undermining long-term diplomatic efforts with “very stupid decisions.”
Despite the growing violence in the region, Trump insisted a resolution was near. “Many calls and meetings now taking place. We will have PEACE soon between Israel and Iran! MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!” he concluded in his post.
Rising Tensions in the Middle East
Trump’s comments come during a period of heightened conflict following Israel’s surprise airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites last Friday. The strikes reportedly killed several top Iranian generals and scientists. In response, Iran launched over 270 missiles, 22 of which hit Israeli targets. Israel has since warned of wider attacks and advised civilians in Iran to vacate areas around military factories.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran’s retaliation would cease if Israeli attacks stop. He also accused the United States of being “a partner in these attacks” and said Washington must be held accountable.
Trump denied any US involvement in the Israeli strikes but issued a warning: any Iranian attack on the United States would trigger a response “at levels never seen before.” Still, he maintained that a diplomatic resolution is within reach and said, “We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!”
Nuclear Fallout
New satellite images show extensive damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities in Natanz and Isfahan, sites central to Iran’s uranium enrichment efforts. Israeli officials say the airstrikes were a preemptive measure to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons—an accusation Iran has repeatedly denied.
While the region teeters on the brink of a broader war, Trump’s latest statements have sparked both skepticism and support, reigniting debate over his approach to foreign diplomacy and Middle East policy.
